Brushing you teeth is a task that you do twice a day every day for your entire life. So it just does not make sense to use harmful chemicals. Your mouth is made to absorb nutrients and thus absorbs any chemicals that you put in it.
I created this tooth powder to remineralize a few cavities that I got from being pregnant and so far it is working great. My husband has been using my tooth powder for over a year and at his dental appointment a few years ago he had two cavities. At his most recent appointment both of his cavities no longer showed up the x-rays. This created much confusion for our dentist. Needless to say I believe that this product works.
One ounce of tooth powder will last one person about one month of brushing twice a day. For a larger family I would recommend the 4oz size
Simply wet your toothbrush and dip into the tooth powder. To prevent contamination if more than one person is using this product. I recommend using either a separate jar for each person or simply scoop out a pea size amount into your hand using a 1/8 tsp measuring spoon or whatever you would like.
Pure Wyoming Sodium Bentonite Clay – US Origin
According to Mountain Rose Herbs:
“Bentonite, also referred to as Montmorillonite, is one of the most effective and powerful healing clays. Bentonite can be used externally as a clay poultice, mud pack or in the bath and, in skin care recipes. A good quality Bentonite should be a grey/cream color and anything bordering “pure white” is suspect. It has a very fine, velveteen feel and is odorless and non-staining.”
A unique clay due to its ability to produce an “electrical charge” when hydrated. Upon contact with fluid, its electrical components change, giving it the ability to absorb toxins. Bentonite is known for its ability to absorb and remove toxins, heavy meats, impurities and chemicals.
Bentonite clay carries a strong negative charge which bonds to the positive charge in many toxins. When it comes in contact with a toxin, chemical or heavy metal, the clay will absorb the toxin and release it’s minerals for the body to use. Bentonite also helps get oxygen to cells as it pulls excess hydrogen and allows the cells to replace it with oxygen instead.
Food Grade Calcium Carbonate from Limestone- US Origin
Pure Food Grade Magnesium Citrate – US Origin
Provides your teeth with the calcium and magnesium they need.
Pharmaceutical Grade Baking Soda – US Origin
(omitted in Baking Soda Free Formula and kids formula)
“Baking soda can be successfully used to remove stains and discolorations from the surface (enamel) of teeth, thereby given teeth a whiter and brighter appearance. Brushing your teeth with baking soda removes stains caused by drinking tea, coffee, and sodas as well as chewing tobacco and smoking. Mixing baking soda and water releases free radicals from the mixture. These free radicals break down the stain molecules on the enamel, which can then be scraped off the teeth using a toothbrush.”
Certified Organic Fair Trade Ground Cloves- US Origin
omitted in kids formula
“Cloves are dried buds from a tree in the Myrtaceae family. Primarily harvested in Indonesia, cloves were thought to first originated in Syria, when they were discovered in a ceramic pot by archaeologists who predict the cloves date back to 1721 BC.”
“The germicidal properties of the oil make it very effective for relieving dental pain, toothache, sore gums and mouth ulcers. Clove contains the compound eugenol, which has been used in dentistry for many years. Gargling with diluted clove oil helps in easing throat pain and irritation. The characteristic smell of clove oil also helps to eliminate bad breath. Clove is also effective against cavities, and traditionally, in India, clove oil was added to a small cotton ball and put at the end of the tooth which has the cavity every day before going to sleep. The cavity would vanish in a few days. As a result, clove oil is added to numerous dental products and medications, including mouthwash and toothpaste. Dentists also mix clove oil with zinc oxide to prepare a white, filling material as a temporary alternative to a root canal.”
Certified Organic Ground Cinnamon- US Origin
omitted in kids formula
“Cinnamon oil demonstrates antimicrobial effects in modern studies. A 2010 clinical trial published in the journal “Food and Chemical Toxicology” by Mehmet Unlu and colleagues from the faculty of medicine at Cumhuriyet University in Sivas, Turkey, demonstrated that cinnamon bark oil effectively destroyed 21 different types of bacteria in the laboratory. Rinsing with diluted cinnamon oil after you brush your teeth, or using a toothpaste that includes cinnamon essential oil as an ingredient, might help you kill harmful bacteria and prevent cavities.”
Certified Ground Peppermint Leaves – US Origin
omitted in kids formula
Improving the health of a person’s mouth is a well known benefit of mint. Since it has germicidal qualities and quickly freshens breath, it adds to oral health by inhibiting harmful bacterial growth inside the mouth and by cleaning the tongue and teeth. This is why mint used to be rubbed directly on the teeth and gums to refresh the mouth and eliminate dangerous forms of growth. In modern times, for the same reason, mint is one of the most common elements in toothpastes, mouthwashes, and other dental hygiene products.
Non-GMO Birch Xylitol- US Origin
Xylitol is a natural sweetener derived from the fibrous parts of plants. It does not break down like sugar and can help keep a neutral pH level in the mouth. Xylitol also prevents bacteria from sticking to the teeth. This is how it protects the teeth from tooth decay. With Xylitol, the acid attack that would otherwise last for over half an hour is stopped.
The number of acid-producing bacteria may fall as much as 90%. No acid is formed because the pH of saliva and plaque does not fall. After taking xylitol, the bacteria do not stick well on the surface of the teeth and as a result, the amount of plaque decreases.
Research has shown that the use of xylitol also helps repair damage to the enamel. Saliva in itself protects the mouth and teeth. Stimulated saliva in particular contains all the components needed to repair early cavities. If sugar is only taken a couple of times a day, the saliva can do the job alone. But most people take sugar so often that the mouth’s own defensive tools are not enough.
Saliva that has xylitol is more alkaline than saliva stimulated by other sugar products. After taking xylitol products, the concentration of basic amino acids and ammonia in saliva and plaque may rise, and plaque pH rises as well. When pH is above 7, calcium and phosphate salts in saliva start to move into those parts of enamel that are weak. Therefore, soft, calcium-deficient enamel sites begin to harden again.

Fluoride, a highly toxic chemical, rather than helping teeth, seems to actually damage teeth by making them too hard and thus brittle. Also be aware that fluoride in its chemical form as used in water fluoridation is seriously implicated in cancer causation and can actually “ruin teeth”.1
Fluoridated toothpaste damages gums. At the concentrations used in commercial fluoridated toothpaste (1,000 ppm), fluoride causes gum damage by poisoning enzyme activity and slowing down the gums’ self-repair mechanisms. By brushing your teeth with fluoridated toothpaste, you gums will suffer damage (according to Dr. John Yiamouyiannis, an authority on fluoride’s biological effects).
According to Dr. Gerald F. Judd’s research, it is very important to avoid all toothpastes containing glycerin since for teeth to be able to remineralize, the tooth surface needs to be clean and “accessible”. This is prevented, however, by glycerin which covers the surface with a sticky and hard-to-remove substance
In spite of being cariogenic with prolonged use (according to research done by dentists at Hamburg university), sorbitol can be found as a sweetener in certain toothpastes.
Surfactants (added as foaming agents). Studies have shown that toothpastes which produce a lot of lather due to the presence of the toxic chemical (detergent surfactant) sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS, aka sodium dodecyl sulfate or SDS) are actually bad for the gums. The foaming property strongly swells up the gums, which would tend to promote periodontosis (receding gums). (Other sources speak of surfactant concentrations above two percent possibly damaging the gums.)
An active component in antifreeze, propylene glycol acts as a wetting agent and surfactant in toothpaste. The Material Safety Data Sheets for propylene glycol warn that the chemical can be rapidly absorbed through the skin, with prolonged contact leading to brain, liver and kidney abnormalities. The EPA won’t allow its workers to handle propylene glycol without wearing rubber gloves, yet it doesn’t stop the chemical from being used in common health care products.
Consumers find diethanolamine, or DEA, in products that foam, including toothpaste. DEA disrupts hormones and forms cancer-causing nitrates. According to Dr. Samuel Epstein, professor of environmental health at University of Illinois, repeated skin exposure to DEA can lead to increased risk of liver and kidney cancers.
Stevia, or the singular stevioside, at least in some studies, seems to affect the male reproductive organs. This was the conclusion of a group of European scientists in early 2006.
The study showed that when male rats were fed high doses of stevioside for 22 months, sperm production was severely reduced, the weight of the seminal vesicles declined, and there was an increase of cell proliferation in their testicles. In time, this could easily cause infertility or other reproductive problems.
In another study, female hamsters were fed large amounts of a derivative of stevioside called steviol. Here the scientists found that the female hamsters had fewer and smaller offspring.
Polyethylene glycols (PEG, added as a dispersant and to bind water) make the skin more pervious to noxious substances possibly containing bromine, iodine or chlorine, and are considered allergenic and/or potentially cancerogenic.
Conventional toothpastes, among other toxins, can contain Triclosan, a chemical.germ killer/antibacterial (also found in mouthwashes, deodorants, soaps etc.). Triclosan belongs to a class of chemicals suspected of causing cancer in humans (even the US EPA apparently considers it a high risk factor to human health). Stored in bodily fat, it can suppress immune function and accumulate to toxic levels with resultant liver, kidney and lung damage. Triclosan is frequently contaminated with toxic dioxins.
